Is the World Ready for Guardians of the Galaxy? (TRAILER)

By the time Marvel’s third massive blockbuster came around the corner in the form of Iron Man 2 the company had already firmly hit their stride. Their comfort zone so to speak. That’s why when Thor and Captain America came around, although seemingly risky, it was no surprise that they pulled it off, and well. And then the real gamble came – The Avengers. Never had a company ever been able to pull off a cinematic feat by combing four major franchises into one film previously. And arguably it was the best movie of Marvel’s Phase One films.

Fast track a few years. We’re well into Marvel’s Phase Two and, no surprise to anyone, it’s doing just fine. Iron Man 3 was loved by fans and critics, and Thor: The Dark World opened up the nine realms a little further, and we’re itching to get our next glimpse of Cap and his team in the Captain America sequel, the Winter Soldier. They’re back in their comfort zone. So, naturally, the next film on their list (after Captain America 2) is Guardians of the Galaxy. If Avengers wasn’t a gamble enough, Guardians of the Galaxy takes that cake.

When Guardians of the Galaxy was announced in the lineup of Marvel’s Phase Two films a few years back, it was safe to assume NOBODY saw that coming. We were expecting Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Ant-Man, etc. – lesser known heroes in their own right, but feasible within the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. After Guardians of the Galaxy was announced there was a resounding “huh?” around the geek world. Not only had Marvel chosen a WHOLE TEAM of heroes that the general public had no idea even existed, but it was a whole team many comic book fans had never heard of. I’d collected comic books since I was 8 years old up until that point and I had only seen or heard of them in passing within the rows of comics at the local store. Up until that point Marvel’s rival company DC had only ever released films for their top two players, Superman and Batman, and a failed attempt at a Green Lantern film. This was Marvel challenging them and the world, stating “we can make a blockbuster out of any one of our characters.” Well the time has come for Marvel to, at long last, unveil their new super-galactic team to the world, the Guardians of the Galaxy. The trailer, as shown on Jimmy Kimmel Live! tonight:

So who and what are the Guardians of the Galaxy? Chris Pratt play’s the part of American pilot Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) who steals a powerful orb and goes on the run from villain Ronan (played by Lee pace). Along the way he joins up with a ragtag group of individuals including Gamora (Zoe Saldana) who grew up the step-daughter of villainous Thanos but wants to chart her own path, Drax the Destroyer (Batista) a warrior in search of vengeance, the tree-like Groot (Vin Diesel), and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper) the genetically engineered raccoon who’s good with guns.

Despite its absurd eccentricity, and due to it to an extent, Guardians of the Galaxy seems more curious than any Marvel production to date – a strong statement in and of itself seeing as how it’s the company’s tenth film in their cinematic universe. Audiences got what they wanted for in Iron Man 3, knew what they were going to get in Thor: The Dark World, and can expect a solid movie out of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But will Guardians of the Galaxy hold true to that caliber of superhero movie? Will its relative-nobody heroes and space adventures bring in the money Disney and Marvel are expecting it to, or will they hamper Marvel’s winning streak? Personally, I expect that, due to its curious nature and absurdity, Guardians of the Galaxy will be a huge hit, potentially piquing the interests of those not inclined towards your average superhero blockbuster. All this remains to be seen. I don’t expect it to be a huge critical success, however, but that it’ll average between 65-75% on rottentomatoes.

  1. I didn’t really have much interest in Guardians at first. I’ve always been a DC girl and recently started to delve into the Marvel universe a bit more, beyond what I knew from the movies, X-Men cartoon and just passing knowledge. And I am completely won over by Marvel, but still had little to no interest or idea of Guardians of the Galaxy.

I understood that the concept of the comic is quite cartoonish, and I felt quite jarred by the teasers we saw for it in some of the previous Marvel films. BUT! Then I saw the trailer the other day… and my mind was blown. I think they are aiming it completely right – it looks kinda cartoony, kinda Fifth Element. It quite possibly doesn’t fit comfortably in the Marvel Universe of the movies, but as it is set off Earth they can perhaps get away with it. To be honest, I don’t care if they aren’t a great fit with the rest of the Marvel’verse, I think it’s going to be awesome anyway!! 😀

    1. I couldn’t agree more. At first glance they seem like the worlds worst choice for a superhero movie. They’re saying Guardians will play out like a space opera and I totally see people flocking to it. I’m very much looking forward to it.

      1. I do wonder if they’ll get some flack for the fact that it will likely be quite different to the current feel of Marvel films, however I think that is something they have attempted to address in the trailers. I am super excited, from the trailer alone I feel like it could be my fave one yet!! 😀

      2. I doubt it. Unless the film just absolutely tanks and people hate it, Marvel shouldn’t be blamed for trying to do something different from the norm. I’m sure they’ll win over audiences in the end.
