Marvel’s The Defenders to Film 60 Hour-Long Episodes in NYC

For those who haven’t already heard, Disney’s Marvel branch plans to partner itself with Netflix to produce 4 series (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage), which will culminate in a joint miniseries entitled the Defenders. Not quite as massive as say, the Avengers, but being that these are some of Marvel’s less touted heroes, it’ll be good to see them on the small screen, all at the same time, on Netflix. Although it’ll be four separate series, and then a miniseries, we’ve yet to find out if they’ll actually be released together (but they have stated it’ll film over a span of 3 years, so that should answer itself).

Disney announced it’s plans yesterday to throw $200 million dollars into the project, and that it’ll be filmed in New York. This is a natural location for filming, because all four heroes take residence in Hell’s Kitchen in the comics.

The press conference took place in Times Square yesterday, with Andrew Cuomo announcing that New York State is offering Disney approximately $4 million in Tax Credits. This listing is said to bring close to 400 full-time job opportunities to the city, and over 3000 part-time jobs.

The cool part (as if the rest wasn’t) is that they’re planning 13 hour long episodes for each hero, and then a 4 to 8 episode miniseries (fingers crossed on 8) called the Defenders on top of that. It’s set to begin filming this July, and expected to be released sometime in 2015.

This is all very exciting to me, so I’d love to hear your thoughts. Marvel’s taking over the industry. The one major question I have now is if and how it’ll connect to Marvel’s entire Cinematic Universe.

  1. I like it because it’s content I would watch (on DVD). I think the constraints on what is put on TV and film actually work in favor of Marvel’s characters because it cuts down on the perverse and basically stupid crap that too many of their “top” writers put into the comicbooks.

  2. Reblogged this on Flying Tiger Comics and commented:
The Defenders – the proper ones- Nighthawk, Valkyrie, Dr. Strange, Silver Surfer, Hulk, Namor, Hellcat- were always my favourites. This could be good. Hopefully the next couple of years will see the back of Quesada, Bendis etc.
If not it makes no odds to me, I gave up reading any Marvel stuff a long time ago.
