Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: 1×15 “Yes Men” (EPISODE REVIEW)

At the end of the previous episode we’re introduced to Lorelei, the deadly Asgardian seductress herself who is known in the comics as Enchantress. Feared by her ability to turn any man to do her bidding (and bedding). She makes it to earth, after 600 years of imprisonment on Asgard, finally released after the events of Thor: The Dark World, and is on a mission to rule Midgard. Many men fall to her power, including Agents Ward and Fitz. A familiar face joins the team for a one-off romp: Lady Sif.

With all of the extensive history that Marvel comics has to tap into, and the already extensive universe that the MCU has at it’s disposal, it’s about time for a proper crossover of brands with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Now, yes, there hardly ever goes an episode without mention of Asgard, or the Avengers, but an actual cameo appearance from some of the actors is warmly accepted, and (aside from Nick Fury) Sif’s presence throughout the episode gave it an air of bigger things to come and the reassurance that Marvel still has some cool tricks up its sleeves, even for their minor characters.

Throughout it all we are hinted with the ever thickening plot of the truth behind Coulson’s resurrection, and the miracle serum injected into Skye in the previous episode. When Coulson confronts her near the end, and begins to explain that the serum has alien origins, and Fury’s secretive intentions may have been more malignant than previously thought. Regardless, the show is whetting my palette far more than it did at the getgo. A very rough start indeed.

Lorelei proved a formidable foe throughout, and the actress was gorgeous. I have little doubt we’ll be seeing more of her in Marvel’s future… Because of Ward and May’s past tendencies, the fact that Ward was so easily seduced by Lorelei May not bode well with their further involvement. Will stay tuned to that front.

Overall, S.H.I.E.L.D. is reaching new heights. It’s taken long enough, but I’m truly excited to see what else they pull from their bag of tricks. No doubt this will all lead up to the events of The Winter Soldier. I really can’t wait.

  1. I hope the show is renewed, but it really needs to start having more recognizable Marvel characters in it, and just some weird outright indescribable stuff like Howard the Duck and/or Man-Thing. A Gerber heavy episode would subvert the genre nicely.
