The Marvel Cinematic Universe Is Now the Highest Grossing Franchise in Domestic History

Now that Captain America: The Winter Soldier has broken April box office records with an impressive $96.2M opening weekend (domestic US), it’s pushed Disney’s MCU all the way up the domestic ladder to land on top. With nine films under their belt, Marvel has officially become the highest grossing film franchise of all time with a cumulative gross of $2.46 billion. It beats out the previous record holder, the Harry Potter franchise.

Please note though, these are not worldwide figures. Worldwide, the Harry Potter franchise is still on top at $7.72B, with the James Bond series at second with $6.15B, putting the MCU in third at $5.97B. Still, quite impressive. I expect that by the time Avengers: Age of Ultron comes around the MCU will be the top grossing series worldwide. And with the news that Kevin Feige and marvel already have their films tentatively planned out until 2028… It’s really only a matter of time.

Just as a reminder, as a thank you for reaching 500 followers on Geekritique I’ll be posting in an in-depth look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe chronological timeline. Almost there. Currently sitting at 447. Thanks guys.

  1. Interesting, is this adjusted for inflation? I wouldn’t be surprised if Bond shoots ahead if that is the case, but otherwise, very interesting statistics.

      1. Ahh okay, yeah, like you said, I imagine Bond would be above and beyond. Still very impressive of Marvel, soon they are going to enter their own economic class – Proletariat, Bourgeoisie, and Disney’s Marvel 😛

      2. According to Wikipedia, “the Harry Potter series has grossed the most, amassing nearly $8 billion over eight films at the box office, although the Eon James Bond series is the highest grossing when adjusted for inflation, with a total of over $13 billion at 2011/12 prices.”
