Hola folks. Welcome to a quick little segment I’ll be calling “Catching Up With Geekritique”. It should be a simple little post to help my readers know what’s going on with the blog, what projects I’m working on currently, what I’ve got my sights on, what to expect review-wise etc. It won’t be a regular post, just sort of a… whenever I just want to talk post.
To begin, I’d like to run down a little of what I’ve been reading lately. My girlfriend and I decided we would have ourselves a little reading group where we’d read each other’s books. I started things off with Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings, as I was already halfway through the book to begin with, and as you can see I really liked it. Unfortunately, I have the tendency to lean towards listening to audiobook recordings than to actually read the physical copies (shame on me), so naturally I finished the book much quicker. My current occupation and driving habits allow me to get through books very quickly actually. In the interim of her catching up, I was also able to relisten to both the Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. I’ve picked up a new fantasy novel entitled The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison (since the book is so new, it has yet to be released on audiobook) and am making my way through that, so I should have a review up soon.
As it is, my reading list is as follows (with product links):
- The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison
- Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson
- Atonement by Ian McEwan
- Leviathan Wakes by James S. A. Corey
I’ve never played Dungeons & Dragons. Why have I never played D&D!? It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but never had the friends around to do it with. Well, with the announcement of the 5th generation of the classic tabletop RPG, I’ve become extremely interested, and have started listening to the Critical Hit podcast so that I can live vicariously through their adventures. (Sad face.)
As projects go, I don’t have anything particular going on. I had an idea yesterday as I looked into the mirror at my Adventure Time t-shirt that it’d be cool to rewatch the entire series, and note down all the occurrences of the hidden mystery behind the story of Adventure Time. For a children’s cartoon, there is some extremely deep symbolism about the state of the Land of Ooo and how it was created via post-nuclear warfare. I might make a big post of it somewhere down the line (far down that line).
As far as movie reviews go, I hope to get the chance to go see Edge of Tomorrow soon! Everyone seems to love it. Aside from that, not looking forward to much else. Aside from Thrones and the 100, not watching anything special on television. The current season of anime shows is a little lackluster in my opinion, and I’m only looking forward to a few titles during the Summer 2014 season. I am watching Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet however, an anime that came out a few years back, and I think it has a great concept.
Sorry about not posting my Geekritique News Roundup earlier today. I’m seriously slacking off at the moment. But I hope to get it to you by tomorrow!
