DC Comics Tease at Least Nine Forthcoming Movies!

This news is coming a few days late due to personal timing, but c’mon! Yes! The war is on! Now that Marvel is set to unleash their arsenal, DC Comics and Warner Bros. have readied theirs. Just this week they announced 9 untitled DC Comics films and 2 untitled “WB Event Films”. What they mean by event films is currently unclear, but speculation is rife, which I’ll talk more on below.

First and foremost, the greatest game of Hollywood chicken ever comes to an end this week. As many of you know, Marvel had its eyes set on Captain America 3 premiering on the date of May 6, 2016, when almost a year later Warner Bros. announced that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice would land on that very same day. Well, Marvel didn’t back down from that date, and along with the news of their untitled film slate, DC Comics this week revealed that they were pushing the film forward a few weeks to March 25, 2016. This is what Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution at Warner Bros. had to say about it:

In terms of going back and reviewing the situation, it looked to us—and maybe our reconnaissance wasn’t great—that they were not going to have a movie [ready] on that date [March 25, 2016]. Just that they held onto it and they might not be able to deliver. But they took another position. The reality now is there really isn’t a bad week to open a movie. If you look at the summer box office this year, you can see that there were so many movies, one after the other. You can start with Spider-Man, two weeks later Godzilla, and then Maleficent, and then Edge of Tomorrow, and then Jump Street and Transformers. And the one thing they all had in common, not one of them did over $250 million. We’ll be the first one up [in 2016], which is very important, and we’ll have six weeks before Captain America comes in.

Really, nobody would have won if they landed on the same date, so this is great news! And we get to see Batman v Superman almost a month and a half earlier!

These are the dates for the upcoming film slate Warner Bros. has teased us with, including BvS.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – March 25, 2016
Untitled DC Film – August 5, 2016
Untitled DC Film – June 23, 2017
Untitled DC Film – November 17, 2017
Untitled DC Film – March 23, 2018
Untitled DC Film – July 27, 2018
Untitled WB Event Film – November 16, 2018
Untitled DC Film – April 5, 2019
Untitled DC Film – June 14, 2019
Untitled DC Film – April 3, 2020
Untitled DC Film – June 19, 2020
Untitled WB Event Film – November 20, 2020

As far as the WB event films go, we can probably assume one of them will be a sequel to the Harry Potter spinoff film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. But the other is too far off to have any logical assumption.

A few weeks back I posted a blog about what the supposed 5-year movie plan was for DC Comics, (which was assumed to be unveiled at Comic Con, but wasn’t). Well, it appears there are more untitled films teased than reporter Nikki Finke claimed to have the insider scoop on, and the dates don’t exactly line up. Perhaps the dates were shifted after Marvel made their untitled schedule known. It’s also very interesting that beginning in 2016 with BvS, we’ll be getting at least two superhero films out of Warner Bros. per year. Will that be able to compete with Marvel’s soon to be three films a year in 2017? Only time will tell, although the success of DC’s entire universe will depend on the success of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Dan Fellman also mentioned that some of those untitled films will be announced later this month.

In other news, Zack Snyder called up a Detroit radio station who were dissing upon Aquaman, merely to defend the hero.

  1. I have been hearing rumors of Aquaman and who will be playing him. Someone at Comic Con said something about Jason Momoa from Game of Thrones and Stargate: Atlantis. What do you think about this? Do you think it’s true?

Honestly, I’m all for DC coming out with some new movies, however every DC movie they have come out with (except for a select few) has had not so decent reviews. I like the Batman series but Superman was not really hitting it for me. I still enjoy the original Superman. I guess what I’m trying to say is, I hope they can up the ante cause if not, Marvel may crush them.

    1. Your informant is quite right. Jason Mamoa is almost certainly going to play Aquaman, which would be a great choice. I think everyone would be surprised if they went with someone else. In fact he’s teased the idea of playing the character in interviews and such. I agree, also, with your assessment of DC films of late. They’ve been extremely hit and miss (except when it comes to the Nolan Batman trilogy). I hope they can get their act together as well.
