Will Jenna Coleman Leave Doctor Who This Christmas?

According to British tabloid The Mirror, our incumbent companion Clara Oswald may be leaving the TARDIS fairly soon. As it stands, Jenna Coleman has stood beside the Doctor for almost 17 months as the current companion, not including her appearance three months prior as the Victorian doppelgänger Clara Oswin Oswald, or her surprise cameo four months prior to that in Asylum of the Daleks. If what this report purports is true she’ll be leaving during this years Christmas special. Read what The Mirror has to say below.

The actress, 28, is believed to be quitting her role as the Time Lord’s assistant in a sensational Christmas storyline.

Her exit could bring an end to her 18 months as Clara Oswald, creating a vacancy for another sidekick to star alongside new Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi.

Yesterday a source said: “The conversations about Jenna’s exit have started, and a plan is in place which is being ironed out.

“By the time she leaves she will be one of the longest-standing companions ever. She has been absolutely brilliant in the role, but everyone agrees it is a part that should change after a period.”

The source added: “It was very much a mutual decision.

“It’s important to keep the series moving and fast-paced, and the time is just starting to feel right and the feeling is that it could be a perfect Christmas storyline.”

The BBC refused to comment on Jenna-Louise’s exit.

Not sure how they counted 18 months, but alright. Being that the source IS The Mirror, don’t rely too heavily on any of this as being factual. But this has been rumored to be the case for some time now, so it can’t be entirely dismissed. What do you think? Will another season of Clara suffice? Do you want to see her go, or will it be too soon? Sound off below.

  1. I’ve liked her as a companion, but I suppose I won’t really know how I feel about the possibility of her leaving the show until I see how she interacts with the new Doctor.

  2. Though only recently becoming addicted to this series, I’m quite aware Dr. Who is built upon changes, and re-manifestations.

Upon reviewing many of the past shows on Netflix it appears casting never failed.

While I’ll miss Clara if this is true, I can only imagine who will be next as the Doctor’s companion. Something to look forward to. Donna, Martha, Amy, and Clara all did well for me, each with different character traits.

River is the constant, and constantly changing is an absolute, knock-out!!!!!!!

  3. They quote “a source”, rather than a person.
They say Coleman’s eighteen month run will be one of the longest ever.
She’s only been a regular for half a season.

    Yeah, it’s BS.

    1. I think they’re referring to her tenure in the TARDIS, rather than her episode count lol. Although, still. She’s nowhere near the longest (Janet Fielding for 3 years). And also, if they quoted specifically that person’s name that person may lose his or her job – which would ruin the potential for future scoops. All journals/websites introduce scoops like this.

They were right about Matt Smith leaving (just prior to Ian Levine confirming it.)

    2. Yeah, it’s broken on a couple of levels. Counting her time “with the show” is fair to count 18 months… but in that time she has only actually appeared in 8 episodes + 2 specials (I think I counted right).

Also, even with the sketchy math she is nowhere near the “longest” tenured companion no matter how you slice it. It’s exaggeration for exaggeration sake.

  4. Typical tabloid non-story. “Lets look at the cast and see who has been there a while. Oh Coleman is in contract talks she’s obviously quitting”. That said sadly it seems the norm to not stay in the revamped series too long. So I wouldn’t be surprised if she moves on once she feels she’s gained all the kudos she can from Who which would be a shame as she has been an excellent character. As she was in Room at the Top (notoriously shedding her clothes) while still in Doctor Who and has done the tick in the box Poliakoff tv play and costume drama Death comes to Pemberley also while playing Clara she might stay on for another season. It might come down to how well the new season & Capaldi are received, if her stock is high she might want to jump to get some good roles, if the season flops she’d probably want to go as well. Too many “mights” to get me too excited which is typical of a newspaper story. That said as I’ve commented its had the desired effect!!!

    1. I do agree. Far too early to really tell. The Mirror is always putting up stuff like this to generate traffic. But somehow I actually believe there are grains of truth in this one.

  5. If you can stand to wade through the pseudo-intellectual custard and right-on political guff of gallifrey base I am sure they said somewhere she was on board for 8 episodes of the first Capaldi season.

    1. I removed myself from Gallifreybase a while back. I received an early copy of the BluRay version of Season 7 part 2 and I’ve never had worse cyberbullying. But it is a decent forum. I head back there occasionally.

      1. I feel the same about it, there are some good posts but far too much smug pack animal behaviour and general head nodding agreement with people, including people responsible for some of the most dreadful adolescent fan fiction published by Virgin and then BBC Books.

        Groupthink’s not for me.

  6. Creative math. Considering her first appearance was in the first episode of series 7… and that started late in 2012… by the time we get to the end of this year, she has been there 18 months, though we haven’t exactly had a long run of episodes during that time.

Hopefully this isn’t true… but people do move on, so it wouldn’t surprise me. I do like Jenna Coleman, so maybe she’ll find her way to something else I’ll be watching.

    1. Yeah. Great actress. Did you know she appears briefly in the first half of Captain America: The First Avenger? Thought it was a strange place to find her on rewatch.

      1. I did not know that. I was planning a re-watch of Captain America just before watching Winter Soldier when it comes out so now I have something else to keep an eye out for… That’s always a neat thing, though, watching an “old” movie and seeing people whom you know now but did not know at the time.
