You might’ve missed the trailer to Marvel’s latest venture (after Avengers: Age of Ultron I mean), which dropped last night. Ant-Man’s first trailer showed up after the 2-hour premiere of the new Agent Carter miniseries. Watch it below if you haven’t already.
This trailer fell quite flat with me, and having to sit through two hours of Agent Carter to watch it was disappointing. The trailer is just so incredibly bland. It seems to me Marvel has no idea how to market Ant-Man. The trailer foolishly showcases every aspect of its emotional and thematic spectrum, but doesn’t focus on any one of them enough to drive anything home. You’ve got your underdog apprentice with incredible aptitude in… something. You’ve got the loving father who wants to… make his daughter proud? He’s got a tragic past, having just being released from prison. You’ve got random riot scenes. You’ve got funny one-liners. You’ve got Evangeline Lilly walking down hallways and some guy banging on a window. You’ve got a guy getting small in a shower and riding an ant.
But what you don’t get? Any reason to want to see this film. Right now, all it has going for it is the fact that it takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer doesn’t even show you why he needs to take up the mantle of Ant-Man, or why these powers could potentially be useful in the first place.

I completely missed this trailer somehow. The Internet and I are just not getting along right now. Grrr.

Quite apart from anything, it’s taking itself way too seriously. Marvel have always managed to be a least a little whimsical with everything, and from I’ve heard of Ant-Man, it was supposed to be a bit more light-hearted. #EdgarWrightwasright

Course, I’ll still see it. It’s Marvel, and they haven’t made an disappointments yet. But I wouldn’t be surprised if this is where they drop the ball.

Yeah, this trailer didn’t really provide any incentive to watch the movie (hopefully, that doesn’t mean it’ll bomb too badly). I love the music, though.

I completely agree with what you said, fell very flat for me. I wish we got to see more about what makes ant-man cool rather that whatever this was, something more like the test footage that leaked out a while ago. And I might just be being overly skeptical, but Rudd’s acting seems weird to me in the last scene, like his character has had it’s personality sucked out of him. Probably just being overly skeptical.
