David Tennant and Daniel Brühl Have Been Cast As Marvel Villains

Yep. Just as the title above suggests, we received news on, not one, but two new Marvel Cinematic Universe villains.

David Tennant has been cast to play a character named the Purple Man (which is a woefully terrible name) on the upcoming Netflix show A.K.A. Jessica Jones. This is good news for both Marvel and Netflix because David Tennant!! He’s easily in one of the world’s most popular fandoms ever, Doctor Who, and has a huge following of fans (boys and girls) all over the web (but mostly Tumblr). Fans will also be quick to point out that Tennant is the second Doctor to play a Marvel villain – Christopher Eccleston being the first.

Zebediah Killgrave (the Purple Man) has, in the comics, the ability to influence others. He’s also been known to give Jessica Jones a hard time, keeping her as his slave, and having her attack other heroes. It’ll definitely be intriguing to find out how Tennant will play this character.

A.K.A. Jessica Jones will be the second series in Marvel’s Netflix takeover, after Daredevil, which will be followed by Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. Here’s the official description:

“After a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.”

Moving back to the movie side of Marvel’s expansive universe, a leaked casting call has given us details about which actor will be playing which supervillain in Captain America: Civil War. Actor Daniel Brühl will be playing Baron Zemo, a notable Cap villain. As many are aware, the Civil War storyline pits its finest heroes against each other, with Captain America and Iron Man fighting the brunt of the battle. This will likely mean Baron Zemo will be pushed to the back a bit. Either way, any news on the Marvel front is worthy of a certain amount of dissection, and this sounds awesome.

“In Captain America: Civil War, billionaire Tony Stark is pitted against Captain America aka Steve Rogers in an ethical face-off over the U.S. government’s Superhuman Registration Act, which requires all superpowered individuals register their powers and report to S.H.I.E.L.D.”

  1. And yet, the first thing I thought of when I heard the name Purple Man was this:

    (Warning: quite weird.)

  2. I can’t believe the Purple Man is entering the MCU. What’s next, The Orb? The Mandrill? The ARMA-FLIPPING-DILLO? This could be heralding in a new era of crappy villaindom (which, admittedly, could be sort of perversely awesome).
    Still, though. David Tennant.
