Doctor Who Series 9: Maisie Williams and New Episode Titles

Filming on the 9th series of Doctor Who is well underway, and earlier today the BBC announced that Maisie Williams, best known for her role as Arya Stark in the hit HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones, will be guest starring in an upcoming Doctor Who role. After returning from touring, her first day on the Doctor Who set was a marked experience for the young actress. She says:

“I’m so excited to be working on Doctor Who as it’s such a big and important part of British Culture. I can’t wait to meet the cast and crew and start filming, especially as we’ll be shooting not too far from my home town.”

Steven Moffat, Executive Producer and showrunner added:

We’re thrilled to have Maisie Williams joining us on Doctor Who. It’s not possible to say too much about who or what she’s playing, but she is going to challenge The Doctor in very unexpected ways. This time he might just be out of his depth, and we know Maisie is going to give him exactly the right sort of hell.”

So who will she be playing? It’s highly unlikely that she will be a new ongoing companion, seeing as how the BBC would have surely just gone and said so, and her commitment to Game of Thrones would make that incredibly difficult (despite the fact that the two series film at different times generally). There’s a strong chance that she may actually be a Coal Hill School student, seeing as how such a thing has already occurred with Courtney. One thing that strikes me as a little odd is her similarity in features to Jenna Coleman herself. Could she be playing a younger Clara Oswald? It wouldn’t surprise me.

As far as episode titles go, we’ve now got four titles to ponder over. Jamie Mathieson (Flatline, Mummy on the Orient Express) and Steven Moffat will co-write episode 5, entitled The Girl Who Died. And Torchwood writer Catherine Tregenna will write episode 6, entitled The Woman Who Lived. Both comprise a complete story, clearly, and will be period pieces (of which era we do not know). Nor is it clear if Maisie Williams will appear in either, but there is a strong chance she will.

  1. Calling it now: The Girl who Died/The Woman who Lived will be a two-parter. It’s unusual for two-parters to have different writers for each part, but as the first four episodes are, I’m thinking every episode will be. And as you pointed-out, the titles are similar. Not sure how it’ll work having one writer per half, but I trust Jamie Mathieson.

    1. I personally have to catch up with Arrow and Flash. I’m sooo behind. I have to spend a day just on catchup. So Hulu doesn’t have it?

  3. Welcome back! Hope your wedding and extended vacation were fun. You missed a post on my blog from about a week or so ago where I drew some of the classic Doctor Who titles… basically my favorites from Pertwee, Tom Baker, Davison, and McCoy eras.

      1. Cool… I figured whenever you came back and posted something Doctor Who related I would let you know since it was in your wheelhouse. I’m anxiously optimistic for the next series of Doctor Who. Last series was a step up, to me, even if it had some things to nitpick… so I’m hoping to continue the upward trend with the next series!
