Daredevil to Receive a Second Season in 2016

Marvel have announced yesterday that the popular Netflix series has been renewed for a second season, due next year. Which is awesome. In my review of the first season, I boldly claim that the “13 episodes of Daredevil are the greatest thing to happen to the superhero genre since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises.” And this is no exaggeration on my part. I honestly feel that is the case. I might go so far as to say it’s Marvel’s strongest property yet. So to hear that it’s been renewed for another season (far sooner than I expected it would be) is a delight.

Unfortunately the current showrunner, Steven S. DeKnight, will be stepping down from his position to move onto other projects. Taking his stead, Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez will take over as showrunners (both of which have worked as writers on the first season of Daredevil).

On his absence in the second season DeKnight mentions, “While previous commitments unfortunately prevent me from continuing on with Daredevil into its second season, I could not be happier that Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez are carrying the torch. They were invaluable collaborators during our first season, and I for one can’t wait to see what they do with the show moving forward.” These ‘previous commitments’ have turned out to be due to a feature film he’s currently working on.

Before the announcement of the second season, it was unclear if we would see the seperate Marvel series’ receiving new seasons before each had come out through the Defenders miniseries (including A.K.A. Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist). It looks as if there will be plenty of overlapping involved, which will surely give me a headache or three when it comes down to updating my Marvel Cinematic Universe Chronological Timeline down the line.

  1. It’s a powerful series and I just love the fact it’s in the same continuity as SHIELD, Avengers, etc. exactly like the comicbooks used to be.

It’s also established a powerful beachhead for the other shows to come, even if some of them are likely to be much weaker offerings. The sharing of the universe means that they will still have other resources to draw on if they need to.

      1. Stan Lee ran 18 comics’ continuity for 8 years, and it’s obvious now that “somebody” has followed his master plan for the film/tv universe.

Good commercial reasons for doing it too- easy to develop new spec scripts, and it encourages the completist fan to go to the cinema / subscribe and then buy their own copies of the complete set.

As I said on my own blog, it makes such a mockery of the “no continuity” SJW slurry of the comicbooks, but I think Disney will wipe out the current books in favor of a closely tied printed product.
