What Are You Reading? (June 2015)

Hello again! What are you, my fellow bloggers, reading this month? The other day I binge-read the entire Harbinger Wars crossover arc from Valiant Comics (soon to be Sony’s claim to an onscreen cinematic universe), and decided I’d drop three quick reviews onto the blog. Sorry about that. Got ahead of myself there.

But I’m currently also enjoying the audiobook for book 5 of James S.A. Corey’s Expanse series, Nemesis Games, which came out this week. That’s very exciting. Each book is unique in that it’s a totally different take on the science fiction drama, and this one seems to be no different.

I still happen to be trudging along with The Dinosaur Lords by Victor Milán. I just haven’t found the time or energy to keep reading. But I shall finish. That arrives July 28th, but you can preorder that here.

And if you wish to plug whatever it is you’re writing or working on, please do. Can’t wait to hear from you!

  1. Well I’m on The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy for the upteenth time. It’s my my favourite novel, and there’s always a new joke every time I read it. There’s also Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, which I thought would be far more interesting than it is. But I’ll keep-on in case it picks-up. Then I can start the Fantastic Four graphic novelisation, as well as my huge back catalog of Doctor Who novels, which I acquired from a drama teacher looking to dispose of them. In fact, I’m also working on a Big Finish-style audio drama with another Whovian. He’s doing the story, I’m doing the transcript. Just as soon as we can decide who’s going to be The Doctor…

  2. Just finished “The King’s General” by Daphne Du Maurier, currently reading “The Knife of Never Letting Go” by Patrick Ness, and next on the list is “As Chimney Sweepers Come To Dust” by Alan Bradley. After that, I’ll probably read Jane Austen’s “Lady Susan” and her unfinished “Sanditon.”

  3. I’m currently reading Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. I got to see the movie back in April and really enjoyed it, so I figured I’d read it. I’m also reading The Book Thief and What If Seriously Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions. Next I’m finally picking up The Well of Ascension and then I got an ARC of Ink and Bone. Then I have a crap ton of library books I need to haul in my next video. Not to mention the literal crap ton of books I got for my birthday the other day. I’m really excited to pick up NOS4A2 by Joe Hill too. So many books my head hurts.

  4. I’m currently about half way through A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin. After that I’ll be deciding on whether I want to read Peter V. Brett’s newest book, The Skull Throne, or reading Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice.

  5. I am almost finished with Me-Time Tales by Rosalind Minett (2013) and will hopefully finish today if the Fates (codeword for family) allow me some quiet time. I’m also plugging through a long one title Achelo: Social Evolution by Andrew Neal that raises some thought-provoking concepts, but seems to be going on forever. I’m only a quarter of the way through and I’m trying to image what more can happen that hasn’t already. But I am curious where the continued study of the concept that society ultimately leads to the destruction of an intelligent species is going to take me. We’ll see if it is where I expect.

  6. I just finished Little Women and Red Queen. I’m about 2/3 though Without You There is No Us (a memoir about teaching undercover in North Korea). After that I’ll probably read Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case or A Little Princess. I didn’t realize it until now, but I’m on a major female writer kick!

  7. Howdy. On the reading front, I always have both a novel and an anthology of shorts going at the same time. [Graphic novels and poetry collections sometimes get worked in.] For anthologies, I am currently reading the soon to be released The Year’s Best Science Fiction and Fantasy, 2015 edited by Rich Norton. Not sure why it’s not up on Goodreads yet when all the previous years are there and it releases next week. After that, I’ll start in on Editor Paula Guran’s annual July release: The Year’s Best Dark Fantasy and Horror, 2015. I’ve come to trust her as an editor.

On novels, I’m finishing a Goodreads First Reads “Revelations” by Kevin Wright. Then I have a couple Del Rey books on the docket: “The Shadow Revolution: Crown and Key” by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith [the entire trilogy releases within 6 weeks] and “Alive” by Scott Sigler due out in early July. Between the two I will read a debut novel by an author that contacted me through the Book Review Directory.

My own writing on the urban fantasy series is chugging along slowly but steadily. I have also been asked to write a short for a new NYC based comic and graphic company to be set within the world of Night of the Living Dead. I need to write it within the week if I’m going to do this.

    1. Oh wow! You’ve got your plate full. That’s something I haven’t found time for, honestly. Anthologies. I need to get on that. That’s pretty sweet you’ve been invited to write for a comic though! Get on it!

      1. The nice thing about anthologies, is that it introduces me to so many writers that others are talking about. I only read 1 or 2 shorts a day [at about 10 pg., that’s not much of a commitment, Then I go back to what I’m reading.

Just gave you info on the comic at Goodreads. . .

  8. I’ve just finished “We All Looked Up” by Tommy Wallach, a story from the POV of 4 teenagers who have to deal with an asteroid that’s about to hit earth. But now I should finally read the 6th and final book in the Mortal Instruments series “City of Heavenly Fire”.

      1. I read the first three books when I was a lot younger than I’m now and I can’t remember that much to be honest. The movie, “City of Bones”, was so terrible, but they’re making a TV show now so I got back into it. It’s a bit addictive, but I prefer the prequel-series “The Infernal Devices” a lot more.

  9. Just finished “Fire on the Mountain,” by Terry Bisson (alternative history concerning what might have happened if John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry had succeeded), and am now about 150 pages into Neal Stephenson’s new one, “Seveneves.” I’ll review both shortly.
