A First Look at MTV’s The Shannara Chronicles

I haven’t read any of the Shannara books, as written by Terry Brooks. It’s one of those never-ending sagas with over 20 installments and I’ve heard they’re generally hit or miss. The first book is said to be an almost direct copy of the Lord of the Rings, so MTV’s new show will actually start us off with book 2, the Elfstones of Shannara. The trailer below, courtesy of SDCC 2015 looks pretty stunning. It’s clear that they put a lot of time, energy, and cash into this post-apocalyptic sword and sorcery fantasy epic. They even went so far as to head out to New Zealand to film.

Whether this will rival the immensity of HBO’s Game of Thrones, remains to be seen. But it’s clear this is MTV’s answer to it’s popularity.

  1. I was intrigued, but then I saw Gough, Millar and Favreau, and then I was interested. That director combined with those producers is a good combination. It seems to have been shot like a western, taking advantage of the landscape and having a constant feeling of movement about it. That genre could work with a fantasy. Now I’ve got to visit New Zealand some time.

  2. What I was most surprised about, was the fact that this came from MTV. Don’t get me wrong, I watch a ton of MTV shows and they get better each year. I’m totally into Teen Wolf, Finding Carter and the unfortunately cancelled Eye Candy, but this is something entirely different. The trailer looks stunning and I don’t see why it shouldn’t work, but the channel is really venturing into the unknown a little.
Now if only they’d focus on more productions of the like, that’d be so amazing!

    1. It may be venturing into the unknown, but they know what elements to use at their disposal. Most obviously, it’s usage of primarily beautiful people. Easy draw to a younger audience.
