Geekritique – How Am I Doing?

Hello followers, friends, fellow bloggers, and spambots. I want to reach out and ask how I, as a blogger, am doing? I’m always looking for ways that I can improve my site. I’m constantly on the lookout for new content and media I can share and dissect. I love reviewing the amazing and vast output of geeky literature or other that finds its way to me (as much of it as I can anyway). But it isn’t always easy. It’s been a little over 20 months now that I’ve been blogging under Geekritique, and it’s definitely been a highlight in my life. I don’t expect it to be viewed that way by others, but I hope that what I do put out is received favorably.

As a critic, I take my work here seriously (most of the time), but that’s not to say that I don’t have fun while doing it. Geekritique isn’t paying my bills. I don’t think it ever will (but it does help pay for coffee though, so that’s nice). Ultimately it’s a means for me to dump my opinions, share news, discuss relevant topics in the community, and basically unburden my mind of all I wish to talk about.

Although I try to remain neutral on many topics, bias can and does creep into my work. That’s one of the issues I have with my own style of blogging, and my personality in general. To give you an example, I don’t consider myself a Marvel fanboy, but you’ll find I have a tendency to report or review Marvel products more than DC. That goes for both films and comics. When I blog I tend to get major tunnel-vision, often posting primarily about one subject. Although Geekritique is about all my dabblings in geek culture, the things I’m most acutely anticipating or delving into are the things I give most of my attention. Case in point, out of my last 50 posts 20 have been about (or have included aspects regarding that of) Star Wars, and I have a handful more in the pipeline on top of that. I know not all of my readers care for Star Wars (you monsters).

I also know I can’t please everyone, and that ultimately this is my blog. But I want to know that I’m doing some stuff right. And I rarely ask for feedback. Are there things I should work on? Types of articles you like seeing/reading? Any that you just plain don’t care for? My timelines have been quite a popular feature, but I also want to know if there are ways I can better them. Please be wholly honest. I’m very curious. Is Geekritique the blog you wanted to follow when you clicked that ‘follow’ button? Is my content consistent? Do I post too little? Too much?

Lately I’ve begun doing a new series called Friday Spotlight, where I introduce the world to an artist or company, or writer, or other that takes part in the community. I love being able to shine the spotlight on up and coming individuals, and sharing their work and creations with others. Would you like to see more of this?

I also hope to soon have other contributors on the site. My wife has shown interest on that front, and may begin contributing to the site at some point, which I think would be great, and will help Geekritique branch out a bit more. What do you guys think? After writing 464 posts in less than two years I might just finally begin allowing others to contribute articles/pieces. Naturally, it would be a slow transition. Maybe one to two articles a month or so. We’ll see.

Anyway. That’s the state of things. If you have any concerns, let me know. If not, I’ll probably just continue talking about Star Wars or something.

  1. I think you do extremely well. And I stand by my earlier statement of assessment that you are almost unique in not being a creepy pimp for a particular brand or company. As disturbing as that is that so many of your peers are actually shills, true it is.

You on the other hand share a love for the culture and it shows in everything you right.

Good stuff and keep on punching!

      1. Getting better. Finished the Sinbad comicbook, doing one based on adventure games now, then a 1920s one. Still waiting for you to interview me so my fame will be assured!

  2. It’s convenient that the blog’s called Geekritique, because anything geeky if enjoyed in a certain way. So all that leaves is the critiquing. And the reviews are my favourite posts, because it can introduce me to something new and it’s unique because it can opinionated. That’s what made Roger Ebert such a popular critic – that he was so effective at communicating how he felt about something. A good tip is to find any descriptions that could be taken out of context and change them. When you can do that, you’re consistent in tone. I’m a film person myself, so the film reviews are my preferred posts, but I do read the others. So long as it remains unique, keep doing it.

  3. I appreciate that you offer a pretty even mix of geek news to geek reviews. If I’m having an exceptionally hectic day, sometimes I’ll see your reports on new things before I have time to catch up with social media, so that’s a nice convenience!

As for bias…that doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The internet already has plenty of neutral, sanitized news aggregators out there. There’s nothing wrong with accentuating the stuff you’re interested in most, especially if your reader base share your sentiments. And when you do express yourself, you seem pretty level-headed. Don’t feel like you’re obligated to cover ALL the geek things ever, because trust me, apathy and antipathy will show right through any “objective” facade. “Here’s a new thing, and here’s my take on it” is much more entertaining to read than “Here’s a new thing and I have no comment. Emotion chip OFF.”

TL;DR version: nice site, keep up the good work. 😀

  4. I love your site… You talk about a variety of things and yet they’re all pretty tightly contained within the element that makes your site geekritique… Which is more than I can say for my blog, because while I mainly do book reviews… which can vary from children’s book to some crazy ertoica I come across… so even that itself is all over the place… but then on occasion I rant like crazy about whatever happens to pop in my head… so I think it’s pretty awesome how well your blog is put together… and you always have good points about the things you talk about… never rude about it or immature… which is more than I can say for some reviews of movies and shows that I’ve read on sites that’s supposed to be legit journalism… so keep on keeping on…

  5. Your blog keeps being a blog I want to follow. The Friday Spotlight is also a nice invention. This is what blogging is also about: We and/or our blogs evolve. 🙂
    Keep up the good work!

    1. That’s kind of how I feel. It’s changed so much since I began, but I’m happy with where it’s at. As long as everyone else is, I’m going to keep pushing forward.

  6. I think you’re doing a great job. Your range of topics overlaps really well with my interests (I’m one that loves the Star Wars stuff, of course). I found last week’s Friday Spotlight interesting, too.
You post more than I read but that might actually be a good thing from your perspective.

  7. It always seems to me like you have a good handle on what you are doing and what you want to do, so no real insight from me here. I’m not as much of a reader as I probably ought to be, so I don’t pay as much attention to your book reviews as I do the movie and TV show reviews, but that’s not criticism, just the reality that all of us in geek-dom still don’t share all the same interests!
