Star Trek Is Returning to Television in 2017

You’ve read that correctly. After the massive mainstream success of the rebooted Star Trek films, it was inevitable that the series would eventually return to television. That time is now. A new Star Trek series, which has yet to be named will arrive in January 2017! (That sounds really far away, but really it’s only just over a year that we have to wait).

Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the two recent Star Trek film outings, will serve as Executive Producer on the series, for better or worse. The new show will air through CBS Television Studios. (This doesn’t mean he’ll be writing the show, so hold onto your hats).

This will be the 6th live action series for the show, and although not a lot of details are available, we do have some brief (yet tantalizing) descriptions.

The brand-new โ€œStar Trekโ€ will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film โ€œStar Trek Beyond,โ€ which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.

The show will premiere on CBS and then be made instantly available through the increasingly popular streaming service “CBS All Access”.

With it’s 50th anniversary happening next year, it has been speculated that we’d be hearing news of this sort at some point soon. Unfortunately it’ll be airing a bit late for a 50th celebration, but I’m sure it’ll be welcome regardless.

  1. I’ve been reading about this today and one thing that has not been clear… Is it going to remain on CBS and just be available through their streaming service AFTER the initial broadcast? OR is it a show that might move to their streaming service exclusively at some point? Outside of that possibility, I’ll be curious to see what they do. I’ve pretty much liked everything Star Trek, even the shows that other people didn’t like as much… so I’m ready!

    1. One thing that also seems pretty unclear to me. It looks as though the first episode will appear on CBS and then the rest will exclusively be streamed through All Access. BUT I COULD BE WRONG!

      I hope. I really hope I’m wrong.

      1. Yeah, that’s what it sounded like to me too… which means it would be a bit of a tease for folks to get the first episode OTA and then none of the rest. I think their All Access is like $6 a month or something, and I’m not looking to have to subscribe to a bunch of $6-$10 services to watch one or two shows on each one. I’ve been missing the Marvel stuff on Netflix for just that reason already.

  2. If the series is to be part of the main timeline canon, then I hope they return to Roddenberry’s vision of the Star Trek universe, where the Federation is essentially good (almost utopic), and the tension comes from exploring the unknown. TOS and TNG did this extremely well, and Voyager was pretty good at it too.

If it’s more of a reboot, then I’m willing to let it develop its own voice.
