The Most Anticipated Science Fiction and Fantasy Books of 2016

2015 was an immense year for genre fiction. And this year looks to be no different. After scouring the web to find the most anticipated books of 2016, I’ve never been more excited to dive into the year’s new reads. In the order the novels are released, take a look at some of the best science fiction and fantasy books we have to look forward to this year. Sadly, the top three most anticipated genre novels are absent from this list as they’re unlikely to arrive this year (Doors of Stone, Winds of Winter, and Oathbringer), but if that status changes, be sure I’ll update this list – as well as if any other big releases get scheduled for release this year. If I missed any big ones, or if I need to update my facts, please let me know in the comments below. (Summaries taken from Goodreads, and links lead to Amazon).

For readers of George Saunders, Kelly Link, and Karen Russell, This Census Taker is the poignant and uncanny new novella from award-winning and bestselling author China Miéville. How’d I do? Are these the most anticipated books of 2016? What books are you looking forward to? Did I miss any major books?

  1. Nice post! A lot of these books look really interesting.

I don’t really like Brandon Sanderson’s books, however. I read The Emperor’s Soul and was really looking forward to his other books, but they were kind of disappointing. I read the first two Mistborn books and Steelheart and I don’t think that his characters have enough depth.

Still, cool stuff. I’ll definitely look into getting some of these.

  2. Thank you so much for visiting and liking my post on my blog. How did you come across it? I like this website overall and this post specifically. More books to add to my list of ports to plunder. Arrrr! Happy sailing and reading to you.

    1. Yes, this is my second visit to this blog. The books seem quite interesting and I may actually read some of these later and give them a full review on my blog. At the moment, reading a top science fiction list, and have written reviews of some of those. The stand out titles like Neuromancer and Hyperion Cantos. I won’t feel qualified to write reviews of contemporary science fiction till I’m done. Nonetheless, I’m interested in how some of these 2016 books update the age old themes of AI, space travel and time dilation. Good list and a helpful place to start. Thanks.

  3. Thx. for liking my tentative attempts to review Hyperion Cantos. As a result, I came here. A great list and quite inspiring. I am currently trawling through classic science fiction with the aim of compiling a review of those. But I will read contemporary fiction once that’s done. The idea is to have something to compare it to. I will definitely revisit here to do that as a I think this blog has the right approach.
