All the BIG Changes and News on Superhero TV This Past Week

This past week saw a huge shakeup in superhero tv. And though much of it is bad news for the genre, we also got a fair bit of good news. No spoilers for any of these programs will be discussed.

The worst news came from the ABC front, where the network cancelled the 3rd season of the well-liked Marvel tie-in program, Agent Carter. The series never could match the viewing figures its parent show, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., brought in. Agent Carter worked as a miniseries, filling the gap left in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s mid-season break, but after even lower numbers in its second season, ABC has decided to pull the plug. ABC has also cancelled Castle, The Muppets, Galavant, Nashville, and The Family.

There is currently a petition going around to bring Agent Carter to Netflix, and they’re asking for a sizable 150,000 signatures. So far, over 83,000 have signed the petition.

ABC has also passed on the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spinoff show, Most Wanted, which would have followed Adrianne Palicki’s Bobbi Morse and Nick Blood’s Lance Hunter. The two were set up to leave Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and pick up their journey as two former spies/spouses on the run from powerful enemies, and it is not currently known if they’ll be returning to their parent show. It does seem likely though.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is being moved from a 9PM slot to 10PM on Tuesdays for its 4th season. This will allow the show “to go a little bit edgier, go a little darker and take some risks,” according to ABC president Channing Dungey.

Though ABC has passed on a Most Wanted series and dropped Agent Carter before its 3rd season, Dungey claims they still have other Marvel options on the horizon. There are several mystery series in the works, one being a comedy and the other from producer John Ridley which will “reinvent” an existing character. Other confirmed projects include the comedy Damage Control, as well as a Cloak & Dagger series on ABC’s cable channel Freeform.

More good news came from the Marvel front, this time coming from the Netflix side of the MCU. Along with news that The Punisher will receive his very own spinoff series, Krysten Ritter claims that season 2 of her popular series, Jessica Jones, will film back-to-back with The Defenders. Ritter also hinted that she may make an appearance in the Luke Cage series. The second season of Jessica Jones is believed to be focusing more on the secondary characters, giving Ritter a bit of a break, as she’ll also be busy filming The Defenders, a crossover series which will include the likes of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.

The strangest adjustment to the superhero tv lineup is the move of Supergirl from CBS to the CW for its 2nd season. As this is a Greg Berlanti produced show, as are Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow, it was always a bit of an odd choice for the program to have landed on CBS in the first place. This should allow the series to further explore the Arrowverse in the long run, and crossover with the other superhero series on the CW, as Supergirl did with The Flash in its 1st season.

AMC has ordered a new documentary series, executively produced by Robert Kirkman, tentatively called Heroes and Villains: The History of Comic Books. Set to arrive in 2017, it will be a 6-part documentary. Each one-hour episode will go in-depth about the people and stories behind the comics, as well as the origins of popular heroes and villains.

  1. I loved the Supergirl Flash crossover. They were just adorable together. I kind of hate that they’re in 2 different universes because it’s got to make it harder to do crossovers later on. But did anyone else find it strange that the Flash didn’t seem to mention him ending up in another universe were the proof of aliens existed to anyone?

  2. I was so sad to hear Agent Carter was cancelled, I really enjoyed that series and felt it could have gone a little longer or make it a mandatory part of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season during it’s break.

Most Wanted needed to be cancelled, it was a horrible idea to venture into and I don’t get abc wanting all these non superhero Marvel projects, Marvel needs to focus on their Netflix series.

And Supergirl moving to the CW just makes sense, its the same team working on it with as with Arrow, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow and it should be part of that extended universe. It was stupid to put it on CBS first

  3. Hopefully Agent Carter will come to Netflix. Maybe we’ll get cameos from Peggy in the Defenders series.
I have been following the Netflix corner of the MCU and I’m mighty excited to see the Punisher get his own show.

  4. I wasn’t able to get into the Marvel TV shows (love the Marvel movies though), tried to watch a couple but didn’t continue. For me, the DC TV shows are much more entertaining and my favorites are The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. I like Arrow but this season wasn’t as good as the previous.

  5. I’m probably going to be watching all of them! I love them. It is surprising how the CW became my most watched channel (I do all streaming but the majority of shows I watch now are CW). 🙂
