The ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ Chronological Timeline

[Last edit – November 13, 2016]

This post has gone through many variations, and is now in a video format, going up until Doctor Strange and the current season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It is my plan to return to an infographic look as soon as time permits me. Please enjoy, like and share.

  1. Thanks for the update 🖒🖒
Just one thing that I personally think needs correcting and please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Unfortunately I feel that the statement made by Charlie Cox about the cut above Claire Temple’s eye happening in the first season of Luke Cage to be untrue.
Maybe that was the original intention but from what I can make out is that by the time Claire arrives in Harlem (Luke Cage – season 1), her friend has alredy been killed and she has quit her job at the hospital in Hells Kitchen. These events happen towards the end of Daredevil – season two, which puts Luke Cage after this.

      1. From what I can see, AoS took a 6 month “jump” while looking for Daisy, and it’s going through much darker stuff (enough of aliens already). Maybe (just maybe) everything on Luke Cage already happened by then, probably right after DD s02 and the “Punisher release”. My two cents.

  2. Daredevil S2 takes place prior to AoS S3. There is no need to place it in the midseason break of AoS S3, doing so only disrupts the flow of AoS, and is not even chronological order. The correct order is:

    Ant-Man
    Daredevil – Season 2, E1-E13
    Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Season 3, E1-E19

      1. Technically, Daredevil season 2 starts running side by side with AOS from around episode 9/10
This is shown in AOS season 3 episode 13
A news report indicates that The punisher is at large (gang fights) which means daredevil is at least 4 episodes in by episode 13 of AOS

  3. Great infographic, definitely the most accurate order I’ve seen yet… As for where to put Daredevil S2, Agents of SHIELD S3 Ep14 mentions ‘gang violence in Hell’s Kitchen’ on the news during the Watchdogs’ attack the ATCU building, indicating that The Punisher may have already begun doing his thing around that time… Granted I personally don’t like breaking up watching TV seasons unless it directly ties in with something else (ie Winter Soldier/AoS) so I just add Daredevil S2 after AoS S3 despite it not being as accurate

  4. Is there a reason why none of the xmen movies (including wolverine and/or deadpool) is up there on the timeline?

    Bit still awesome timeline!!

    1. Yes. They don’t share the same timeline. Fox owns the rights to the X-Men films and characters associated to the X-Men, like Deadpool, as well as the Fantastic Four. The MCU, as owned by Marvel Studios began in 2008 as a project that allowed them to bring together each of the franchises and series Marvel hadn’t already sold the films rights to. This is also why none of the older Spider-Man films are here, as Sony owns the rights.

  5. Geekritique: “It is a chronological list. And the events of DDs2 occur in a much shorter timeframe than the previous season. It all occurs during the summer months of 2015. Before AoS s3”

If we agree, why haven’t you changed it in the timeline, then?

    1. at OP, still nice of you to make this, and also the other timelines. I just need it for the series but thanks 😉

  6. The order should be:

    Ant-Man
    Daredevil – Season 2, E1-E13
    Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Season 3, E1-E19
    Captain America 3: Civil War

Daredevil’s second season begins in July 2015, (they talk about there being a “heatwave”). There is no chronological need to watch Daredevil S2, during the midseason break of AoS S3. It would flow much better, watching DD S2 first, then just watching the 19 episodes of AoS S3, leading into Civil War.

    1. If DD’s second season begins chronologically in July 2015, and AoS’s third season begins chronologically in late September of 2015, I don’t see the big issue.

      1. It’s not a big issue, but I thought this was suppose to be a chronological list? DD S2 starts 2 months before AoS S3, and there is NO chronological need to wedge DD S2 between E10 and E11 of AoS S3. If you don’t agree, then okay, but I just thought you were going for a chronological list.

  7. thank you very much for this, i have watched all with this chronologie for Civil War 🙂 but after Civil War and AoS season 2 what’s the matter? thanks for your work!

  8. May I asked how you created this? I’ve been working on a similar project for Star Wars and the one thing I just can’t get right is the stylized titles.

This an excellent undertaking. All the applause belongs to you.

    1. Hey, I use the Canva app on my iPad. Takes a bit of getting used to, but it’s the best on the App Store, and it’s free. As far as the logos just look up, say, “Star Wars png” or something more specific, but make sure it’s a ping file if you’re looking for cutout images.

  9. Shouldn’t The Consultant take place after Iron Man 2, since Starks cameo in Incredible Hulk is due to him being sent to antagonize Ross, as described in the one-shot?

  10. This is awesome! My only question: why did you place the Agent Carter one shot after the TV show? Didn’t the TV show spin off of the one shot?

  11. Marvel Studios may be owned by Disney now, but the Marvel Universe expands more then just the Avengers members and has been the topic of entertainment for many many many years! It doesn’t matter if this character belongs to Sony, or that character belongs to Disney… they all exist in the same universe and were all created by the same team Marvel Comics. If you really want an accurate timeline you really have to dig alot deeper into comic book history! Sorry… This timeline is just not very complete at all. Let’s not forget about Deadpool… or if you really want to get esoteric, you gotta throw Stripperella into the mix as well! All Marvel characters and all in the same universe!

    1. I agree in theory. But though they share a continuity within the comics it would make absolutely no sense within the cinematic universe Marvel has created. That would be anarchic and strange, especially seeing how (in the MCU) it essentially all revolves around the Avengers films. You’ll never see any X-Men characters in the MCU as they’re owned by Fox. Similarly, the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy doesn’t share the same continuity as the Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield. This isn’t a release order for every Marvel property. This is a chronological timeline of only films and shows that share a singular on-screen universe, and everything you’ve mentioned is not considered canonical within that universe. Also, as this timeline is not a release order, you’ll notice films and shows are placed in strange orders (Captain America: The First Avenger is actually the fourth Marvel film, but it was the first chronologically). I guess within one’s headcanon you can try to fit them all, but that would be a disservice to the millions of hours of hard work the people at Marvel Studios did to create a cohesive on-screen universe. I see what you’re saying though. If I ever did a timeline by release of all Marvel properties that don’t share an on-screen universe (but do within the comics) I’d include that other stuff.

      1. I’m sorry… I have to disagree. Marvel has established that there are many dimensions all within the same universe long before Hollywood got a hold of them. It doesn’t matter who owns what character… every one of the characters were all created by Marvel. You have basically limited the entire timeline to just the Marvel Universe as owned by Disney… which seriously limits and frankly feels like a slap in the face, the entire universe itself. What about The Fantastic Four… Spiderman… the X-men… all existed IN THIS CINEMATIC universe whether they were owned by Disney or not. If all you’re looking for is publicity for Disney, you’ve acheived it, but if you want to do it right… get it right! But you really should make that more abundantly clear!

      2. This is only items dubbed as existing within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a brand of film and television. If that doesn’t make sense to you, I’m sorry. I would love if they all worked together. I did not make this list. This is merely an onscreen universe with connections to other films and television shows. The creators of the films made the decision to have a shared continuity with characters and franchises still owned by Marvel, and that’s what they’ve done. Hollywood politics are to blame for the discrepancy of what stories fit like a puzzle with each other’s and what doesn’t. What you’re proposing is stupid, honestly. It’s like someone taking a bunch of pieces from other jigsaw puzzles and trying to add them to the one you’re currently trying to complete. X-Men films, though they’re branded as Marvel films, don’t fall under the MCU. If you don’t get that, you’re just messing with me as a troll, or you’re seriously confused.

      3. Jim, are you a moron? Serious question. The article is called “The Marvel Cinematic Universe Chronological Timeline”. The Marvel films and TV shows by Marvel Studios are under the umbrella name of the “Marvel Cinematic Universe”, often shortened to MCU. The article could not be more clear about this, it’s explicitly stated in the title.

Imagine this were a chronological list of the kings of England – you would effectively be complaining that Spanish royalty isn’t included as well. Now give the man some credit for the awesome job he has done here and/or move along.

      4. The next Spider-Man film, though owned by Sony, WILL be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (which doesn’t benefit Disney). That means only that iteration of the character will fit into the MCU. They’re all based off the same character in the comics, I’m not arguing that, but only this version of the onscreen character is included in the MCU. Just as in the comics the 616 universe and the ultimate universe have different continuities and the characters dont have the same timelines, the same goes for the movies outside of the MCU. Can’t spell it out any better than that.

  12. What about all the 70’s and 80’s shows… like the Incredible Hulk with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferigno or the badly made Spiderman series… and then what about all the cartoon series with Marvel characters (X-Men, Spiderman and Friends, etc), or even the made for DVD cartoon movies like Ironman vs Hulk, etc? You’ve left out alot of time here constricting to everything after after the Captain America movie… I’m sure if you stack the rest of those onto the pile you’ll end up with at least a few more weeks of time!

    1. This only includes those items included in the shared Marvel Cinematic Universe, which share a continuity. This doesn’t include any items owned by Fox or Sony, or anything prior to the first Iron Man film.

    1. That one is easy it has to do with Tony Stark approaching Ross about putting a team together reffrencing the avengers innitive where Tony was recruited as a consultant at the end of Ironman 2

    1. Well, I was able to place The Incredible Hulk in there. The first Hulk does not exist canonically within the MCU, or the Marvel Cinematic Universe – all products of Marvel Studios, owned by Disney. Unfortunately all X-Men, Daredevil, and Wolverine films don’t share that continuity as they’re owned by Fox. The Spider-Man trilogy with Toby Maguire and the would-be trilogy with Andrew Garfield don’t exist in the MCU either, as they’re owned by Sony. However, Marvel and Sony have made an agreement to include Spider-Man in the MCU moving forward. You’ll see him debut in Civil War.
