Geek Culture Rewind 2016 (SPOILER WARNING)

In every medium, whether it be written, sung, drawn or shown, entertainment is a form of escape, especially when considering fiction. While it’s always enjoyable to escape from the mundanity of our daily lives, sometimes entertainment becomes more necessary than we give it credit for. When pressures are high, and the world seems too lost for any proper resolution to take shape, these escapes into fiction help us cope with the day to day and to better understand ourselves. If 2016 has taught us anything, it’s that escape is a powerful tool, one we sorely need. Getting lost in fantastical worlds, imagining magical settings, and finding enjoyment in things or persons that could never be, might prove to be more therapeutic than anything a psychiatrist may prescribe. But we’re not board certified, so don’t take our word for it.

While we don’t profess to have seen or played every title or series featured in this video, it was our wish to include as many varied choices as possible to appeal to as many viewers as possible. Whether or not you liked all the films, shows or games included in the video, it was important for us to showcase both the good and the bad. And though we did our best to include as many geeky properties as were released this year as could fit, we invariably missed something or many somethings, and we mean no offense by forgetting [insert title here].

We chose to use this particular remix of ‘Closer (feat. Halsey),’ with the full understanding that this video cannot be monetized accordingly, because it encapsulates 2016 so well. If ads do appear, please note that it is the copyright holder of the song that will be receiving any potential revenue.

We hope you enjoyed this video, and can name as many titles as possible! How many do you recognize?

  1. I consume fiction like some people read the Bible. If I didn’t have fiction, I’d probably be lost in life. Fiction is the only way for me to forget the way the world’s going. Especially because this year has been one, long existential crisis for me. Fiction is the only thing that’s able to calm my moods and keep my anxiety at bay. I retreated into fiction during school, and I haven’t felt ready to face reality again yet. If music is the universal language, fiction is the universal conversation. I would much prefer to explain why I thought a film was badly structured than to pointlessly argue about politics, for example. Fiction is infinite, so we’ll never run out of things to say to each other. Ever since David Bowie died, I’ve been in a constantly fluctuating, bipolarised state of creative inspiration vs artistic crisis. But that’s why I’ve also developed the ability to feel connected to people who live in a different time zone as if they were the people around me.

I won’t try to identify any of the featured media, or I’ll be here all day. But instead, here are some of my favourite things from 2016:
    Film: Sing Street
Television: Doctor Who – The Return of Doctor Mysterio
    Album: ★

“Everything ends and it’s always sad. But everything begins again, too, and that’s always happy. Be happy.”

    1. Haha, you literally would be here all day. And dude, I feel you. Especially today. The world suffered an immense loss, and I’m deeply depressed about it. Thank you for the comment, because your Insight rounds out my own.
