So, There’s a Cloverfield Spinoff Arriving in Two Months – And Nobody Knew About It

Didn’t think we’d see the day when a Cloverfield sequel and/or spinoff would arrive, but uhh. Yeah. Moviegoers last night who went to go see Michael Bay’s 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi got a sneak peak at the new trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane. It was apparently filmed in secret, and judging by the contents of the trailer, you can see how they accomplished that. Take a look.

Producer J.J. Abrams had this to say of the film, which is [incredibly] due out in March:

“The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”

What does he mean when he says “blood relative”? It’s certainly an odd way to describe the film. Perhaps there’s more to it than meets the eye.

  1. I am juiced for this, having always wanted to spend more time in the Cloverfield universe. I assume this takes place after the events of the first movie? And, unlike the first movie, this one seems to be heavily studio-bound, so, without location shooting to give the game away, maybe they really could just head into a closed set every day and say, “Yeah, that’s right, we’re making Valencia!” … not like, say, putting up signs saying “We are filming Fiona’s Tale today” but all the crew are decked out in The Amazing Spider-Man T-shirts and Andrew Garfield is sitting on the roof of a house in Brooklyn. So in this case, giving a fake production title actually worked. #BlueHarvest

Oh, and P.S., John Goodman being in this is just *awesome*.

  2. It looks like a cool idea. And best of all, it looks like it can’t possibly be a thinly veiled remake of Cloverfield, which is always something I worry about a little with JJ Abrams.

  3. The only connection that I can see is the title. It’ll probably be a piece of trivia in pub quizzes, i.e.: “The lane’s name, Cloverfield, was also the name of a titular monster in another monster movie Abrams produced”.

I was more films could happen like this. Abrams is so good at keeping secrets, that other producers should be looking at what he’s doing and trying to take inspiration from it. It’s like when my Dad tells me about how films didn’t used to have great marketing, and you’d only find out about them much closer to release than we’re used to. Hopefully, in the future, other films can hold back until till that time. I’d be happy only seeing a preview of a film the Monday before it’s released.
