Quick update for you Star Wars fans, which… hopefully you are one if you’re here…, but also interesting news for fans of Game of Thrones because today it was announced that the creators of the hit HBO series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.
And while the mind may jump to the conclusion that this has some connection to Rian Johnson’s proposed new trilogy of films OR the continuing episodic Skywalker saga, it has been confirmed this new series of films will be separate from those projects.
As for when we’ll learn more about this planned series? Probably not until 2019, unless details leak early. Benioff and Weiss said that they “are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ is complete. The show will end its run in 2019.
It seems like it would have been common sense that the duo would take control of the new live action Star Wars tv series that Disney will push on their 2019 streaming service, seeing as how they’ve made their name on TV and all, but according to Disney CEO Bob Iger “Their interest was in creating a series of films that are ‘Star Wars’ based,” and that they didn’t express interest about a [tv] series.”
But speaking about that tv series, it’s also been announced today that Lucasfilm are working on multiple new shows set in the Star Wars universe. The news comes from ABC’s Clayton Sandell who tweets “Just In: Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger says there are “not just one” but “a few” Star Wars series in development for the small screen.
While this could mean more than two Star Wars series in the pipeline, I’m guessing it’s just two for now. The Live action one we know about and, likely, another animated series that will replace Star Wars Rebels, probably with Dave Filoni at the helm. Rebels only has 5 more episodes to go before its conclusion and will leave them open to work on another animated series.
My hope for a future animated series? That they’ll explore Luke’s new Jedi Order in between episodes 6 and 7. Mark Hamill is after all an extremely talented voice actor.
What do you guys think? Are you excited? Are you nervous? Should they take it one film at a time instead of looking at full series?
I’m all for this, there is so much to explore in the Star Wars Universe, just look at all the Legends stuff around. Of course, they have to be careful not to oversaturate us and only provide quality content.

Sounds pretty good, the Star Wars universe has loads of potential to expand into TV shows to complement the new movies.
