The Force Awakens Breaks All the Records! [Updated w/more records]

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a big film. I don’t need to explain why. It was bound to break many records, and likely it’ll break many more along the way. Yesterday it was estimated that The Force Awakens took the second biggest worldwide box office opening, just under ‘Jurassic World’. Those estimates were low it seems, and we’re now looking at a new reigning box office champion. And that’s doubly impressive, considering the film hasn’t even debuted in China yet, the 2nd biggest market for films in the world! But take a look at this list of box office records it’s broken already.

  • Biggest domestic debut with $247 million (Previous record: ‘Jurassic World’ with $208.8 million)
  • Biggest global debut with $528 million (Previous record: ‘Jurassic World’ with $524.9 million)
  • Biggest Thursday preview gross with $57 million (Previous record holder: ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2’ with $43.5 million)
  • First film to surpass single-day gross over $100 million
  • Fastest film to $100 million (Previous record holder: ‘Jurassic World’)
  • Fastest film to $200 million (Previous record holder: ‘Jurassic World’)
  • Fastest film to $300 million in 5 days (Previous record holder: ‘Jurassic World’ in 8 days)
  • Biggest December debut (Previous record: ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ with $84.6 million)
  • Highest per-theater average for a wide release with $57,568 (Previous record: ‘Jurassic World’ with $48,855)
  • Biggest opening weekend of all time in U.K., Russia, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Austria, Denmark, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Ukraine, Iceland, Serbia and New Zealand
  • Biggest IMAX debut with $48 million
  • Most pre-sales with over $100 million (Previous record: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ with $25 million)
  • Best Friday gross with $120.5 million (Previous record: ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2’ with $91.1 million)
  • Third best Saturday gross with $68.7 million (Record holders: ‘Jurassic World’ with $69.6 and ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ with $69.5 million)
  • Best Sunday gross with $61 million (Previous record: ‘Jurassic World’ with $57.2 million)
  • Best Monday gross with $40.1 million (Previous record: ‘Spider-Man 2’ with $27.2 million)
  • Best opening for a ‘Star Wars’ film (Previous record: ‘Revenge of the Sith’ with $108.4 million)

Now we’ll just have to wait and see if it’ll dethrone Avatar and Titanic, the two top grossing films of all time (both directed by James Cameron). I think we can safely assume it shall. But we’ll see.

This is coincidentally Geekritique’s 500th post!

  1. I have my doubts as to the legs on this film. Now that the hype is wearing down and the flaws are becoming more widely acknowledged I think that these numbers are going to drop off.

It’s (probably) not going to suffer a TPM style backlash, but the hype has definitely done its job to get us to this point.

      1. Hype and/or editorial mandate has blinded many a reviewer before… Time (and more viewings) will tell. There are definitely more people starting to rethink their views on forums and such, which is anecdotal but is the only evidence I have to go on either way. A lot of fans I know IRL were dissatisfied as well but again, anecdotal.

You can’t doubt or question the film’s success at all. I just expect a fairly swift drop off that will leave it far short of the Cameron films.

      2. Yeah, I guess time will tell. Looking ahead at the next few months will be interesting. Especially noting that neither January nor February have any big film releases that will push it under the top spot.
